The qualifications that make up the intermediate level apprenticeship are primarily delivered at level 2. The specific qualifications completed will depend on whether you are taking a gym instructor or exercise to music instructor pathway. In any case, these qualifications focus on the knowledge and skills required to effectively plan and teach exercise to groups and individual participants.
In addition to the fitness instructor qualifications, you will also be required to complete a level 1 functional Skills qualification in maths and English. If however in the past 5 years you have attained a GCSE in maths or English (grade A-C), you will be exempt from this part of the programme.
As an apprentice, you will be required to complete 30 hours of work each week for a period of 12 months or more. During these working hours, your duties will be varied, and will likely include:

In addition to the above qualifications, HFE apprentices also receive a FREE Level 2 Certificate in Circuit Training, adding even greater value to your apprenticeship programme and further improving your future career prospects.
The programme is delivered and assessed through a combination of training course attendance and workplace assessments.
The formal ‘off the job’ assessments will take place at one of our regional training venues, and will largely focus on the technical certificates you are required to complete. The ‘on the job’ assessments will take place in your workplace, and will focus primarily on the NVQ part of this qualification.
Throughout your apprenticeship programme, you will complete a number of ongoing assessments, including:
All outcome of the above assessments will be presented in a portfolio of evidence, to demonstrate that you have the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies to perform the role of a fitness instructor.
There are no educational pre-requisites to complete this apprenticeship programme. You must however be in employment, or have employment secured as an apprentice before you can start this programme.
You must also have a passion for exercise, fitness and/or sport, and be extremely committed and motivated to complete all of the on and off the job parts of the apprenticeship programme.
