It’s not enough to exercise regularly, or even to eat a healthy balanced diet, the two must be combined to maximise the health and vitality.

Our Level 3 Nutrition for Physical Activity will equip you with the skills needed to assess the nutritional practices of others, and the knowledge to provide practical ‘real life’ solutions that will improve the dietary habits of your clients. The qualification is also a mandatory unit within the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training, another indication of just how valuable nutritional knowledge is.

Diet and nutrition are so fundamental to a healthy lifestyle that you need to be able to confidently give clients advice based on fact not fallacies. To achieve this, the course includes:

Digestive system:

  • Elements and processes of the digestive system
  • How food is consumed and absorbed

Carbohydrates, fats, proteins and water:

  • Sources, functions and examples of each
  • Glycaemic index
  • Types of fat
  • Metabolism, fluid loss and dehydration


  • Breakdown of vitamins and minerals
  • Roles and sources
  • Appropriate supplementation

Measure of energy:

  • Bioenergetics
  • Metabolism and metabolic rate
  • Calculating nutrient and energy requirements

Healthy eating guidelines:

  • The food pyramid
  • Portion guidelines
  • Food labels

It also covers issues relating to:

  • Weight management
  • Popular nutrition myths and diets
  • Religious and cultural dietary concerns
  • Eating disorders
  • Supporting clients to change
  • Designing a nutrition programme


The course is assessed in several ways, designed to test and apply your knowledge in a range of practical situations:

  • Worksheet – Covering the principles of nutrition, and important health and safety considerations
  • Theory exam – 30 question multiple choice exam
  • Case study – Using everything you’ve learned on the course, you’ll create a three-day food diary based on an individual’s activity. After you’ve analysed the results, you’ll produce a set of goals to improve their dietary practices


There are no formal prerequisites for this course; however we recommend you already hold a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instruction (in the context of Exercise to Music or Gym Instructor). If you already possess the Level 2 Nutrition for a Healthy Lifestyle, enrolment will also be considered. Above all else you must have a keen interest in nutrition and a strong desire to improve the dietary practices of clients.


REPs Level 320 CPD points

This qualification is worth 20 points with the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). While you cannot directly join the register, or achieve REPs Level 3 status with this qualification, it is a fantastic opportunity for CPD. The course is also worth 6 credits within the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF).

    First class delivery and support through training courses

    I have completed a whole range of courses with HFE and their professionalism in delivery and support has been outstanding. They set and maintain the standards I would expect for the fitness industry and there are no 'easy passes'.
