Apprenticeships are fixed term jobs with a clear skills development programme attached to them. Usually, they last between 12-18 months depending on the chosen pathway. They aren't just for new employees either and businesses can use apprenticeship programmes to upskill existing employees, providing they are between 16-24 years of age.
As an apprentice, you must be employed for a minimum of 30 hours a week and be paid at or above the National Apprenticeship Wage (currently £99 per week). In our experience the more impact an apprentice makes with an employer, the more likely they are to not only earn above the minimum wage, but also boost their chances of securing long term employment post-apprenticeship.
Unlike university, an apprentice won't have to pay a penny towards the cost of their training/education. This is because apprenticeships are funded by Government through the Skills Funding Agency (SFA). If you're aged between 16-18 then the entire cost of the apprenticeship is covered. For those 19-23 then only partial funding is available with the remainder usually covered by the employer and/or training provider.
SMEs should note that up to £1,500 funding is available in the form of an Apprenticeship Grant for Employers (AGE) when hiring an apprentice aged 16-24.
