Apprenticeships are fixed term jobs with a clear skills development programme attached to them. Usually, they last between 12-18 months depending on the chosen pathway. They aren't just for new employees either and businesses can use apprenticeship programmes to upskill existing employees, providing they are between 16-24 years of age.
As an apprentice, you must be employed for a minimum of 30 hours a week and be paid at or above the National Apprenticeship Wage (currently £105 per week). In our experience the more impact an apprentice makes with an employer, the more likely they are to not only earn above the minimum wage, but also boost their chances of securing long term employment post-apprenticeship.
Unlike university, an apprentice won't have to pay a penny towards the cost of their training/education. This is because apprenticeships are funded by Government through the Skills Funding Agency (SFA). If you're aged between 16-18 then the entire cost of the apprenticeship is covered. For those 19-23 then only partial funding is available with the remainder usually covered by the employer and/or training provider.
SMEs should note that up to £1,500 funding is available in the form of an Apprenticeship Grant for Employers (AGE) when hiring an apprentice aged 16-24.
As a learner, ultimately only you will know whether an apprenticeship is right for you. A few benefits to think about include: earning a wage while you learn; structured on the job training; the opportunity to achieve nationally-recognised qualifications; the ability to gain invaluable work experience; and unlike university, you won't ever have to pay any tuition fees.
For learners, we ensure you receive industry-leading training and support during your apprenticeship. This includes regular contact with our dedicated apprenticeship team and access to award-winning learning resources.
With regards to apprenticeship employers, we work tirelessly to ensure you get the most out of the programme. We can handle every step of the process including advertising an apprenticeship vacancy, to screening potential candidates before interview. As a thank you to our apprenticeship employers, we also offer a generous 15% discount on all our commercial courses and qualifications.
With regards to benefiting a business, the evidence is overwhelming. For example, when questioned: 70% of businesses reported that apprenticeships improved their quality or service and productivity; 92% said apprenticeships had led to a more motivated and satisfied workforce; and 80% of businesses who invested in apprentices reported an increase in staff retention.
With regards to benefiting the apprentice; refer to is an apprenticeship right for me.
