Learn More About This PPN Course

Intro

Traditionally, when a woman became pregnant the advice given was that they should take things easy and put their feet up. While sufficient rest is clearly important to both mother and baby, and prolonged standing or over-exertion should be avoided, pregnant women are increasingly being encouraged to remain as active as possible, for as long as possible.

There are always important factors and considerations that must be addressed, but exercise can have a range of benefits including preventing excessive weight gain, reducing nausea and fatigue, improving posture and increasing foetal growth.

Exercise programmes should be as inclusive as possible and that’s precisely why this qualification exists. It’s our job to empower exercise professionals and remove any fear or hesitation of working with pregnant clients. This can only be done with the right skills and the appropriate level of knowledge.

Our pre and postnatal course is fully accredited by YMCA Awards and recognised by CIMSPA. This qualification is delivered primarily through home-study, although you will be required to attend one of our training venues to complete a theory assessment.

Alongside this, you’ll have access to a wealth of learning resources including bespoke manuals and online content such as practice quizzes, and innovative video lectures presented by a highly experienced, registered midwife.

What You'll Learn

As this is primarily a home study course, we’ll provide all the learning resources and support you need to succeed. Here’s a selection of topics you’ll encounter on course:

  • Physical Conditions Associated with Pregnancy

  • Nutrition and Pregnancy

  • Pre and Postnatal Exercise Guidelines

  • Child Birth

  • Benefits and Risks of Exercise

  • Anatomical and Physiological Changes

To guide your learning and to really bring the course to life, we’ve created a series of video lectures presented by a highly experienced, registered midwife. You can get a feel for this content by watching the short promo video below.

How You'll Be Assessed

Our pre and postnatal course has three mandatory assessments that you’ll need to complete during your studies.

To give you plenty of opportunities to practice and hone your skills, within LES (the Learner Engagement System), you’ll find multiple-choice questions from a range of topics.

  • PPN Theory Exam

30 multiple choice questions, 70% pass mark required

  • Worksheet

Demonstrate your understanding of the changes that occur during and after pregnancy to enable safe and effective exercise

  • Case Study

Apply your knowledge and develop an exercise programme for a hypothetical client

Entry Requirements

In order to enrol onto this training course, you must already possess a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instruction – either gym-based or group exercise. Those with a Level 3 Diploma in Mat Pilates or a Level 3 Yoga Teacher qualification are also eligible.

If you have any specific questions about entry requirements or about the content of this PPN course, call our Careers team on 0800 612 4067 or send us a quick email using the button at the top of the page.

Wow, this course is not for the faint-hearted! It's hard work! But that is what I signed up for, the support I received from my mentor and tutor was superb really personal and always with time for me. Great coaching and revision was easy because I worked through it with my mentor who pushed me to achieve.

After dreading this course for months it was time to attend and as I say wasn't looking forward to it! But the tutors were great very relaxed and friendly didn't make things too complicated explaining all elements, end up getting really good feedback at the end of the 1st weekend so felt a little more confident to take my exam!
