Kickstart your career and become a fully qualified fitness instructorEnquire today
This is the industry's most popular entry-level qualification and a must-have if you want to advance to Level 3 and become a personal trainer.
Gyms, leisure centres and health clubs are vibrant and fast-paced places to work. Every client that walks through the door is different and for a fitness instructor, no two days are ever going to be the same.
Many see becoming a gym instructor as a stepping stone to advancing to personal training, and while it is an entry requirement for that course, it’s an incredibly rewarding job in its own right. Day to day, gym instructors find themselves performing inductions for new members, maintaining exercise equipment, giving diet advice, planning sessions, ensuring the environment is clean and tidy at all times, and much more.
Our Level 2 Gym Instructor course is fully accredited by YMCA Awards and recognised by REPs and CIMSPA, which means the door is open to use this qualification internationally. Delivered via blended learning, this flexible approach combines home study with unlimited phone and email support, bespoke learning resources, and practical attendance at one of our nationwide venues.
Looking for more? Well, that’s what we’re all about. Why not have a look at our personal trainer career guides and articles.
From theory to practical, you’ll learn exactly what it takes to become a leading gym instructor. Below is a selection of the topics you’ll encounter on course:
Plus, you’ll also gain vital knowledge of effective warm-up and cool-down methods, bodyweight and free weight exercise techniques, all-important health and safety, and much more.
We’ve split the course into multiple components which will challenge you and assess you in a range of exciting theoretical and practical ways.
Regardless of your learning style and speed, you’ll receive as much support as you need in order to pass.
Every fitness professional has to start somewhere and as this is an entry-level course, there are no formal entry requirements or prerequisites.
What will help you get off to flying start however is some experience of using cardiovascular and resistance equipment, as well as free weights, in your local gym.
Before your first practical course weekend, we recommend 6-8 weeks of home study (based on an hour a day).
That will give you plenty of time to read through your Level 2 Anatomy and Physiology and Level 2 Gym Instructor manuals and use LES (the Learner Engagement System) to complete the various workbooks.

"HFE is the ultimate fitness training provider, without a doubt their personal training courses are the best in the industry."
"The course has really helped me to better understand yoga so that I can improve my performance and remain World No. 1"
"HFE have produced some of the best materials I have seen in education."
"HFE is the most professional and cutting edge fitness provider I have ever seen."
Having now completed my first year with Gregg I feel like I have really gained a lot of knowledge that has prepared me to continue my second year with HFE and Gregg, over all I’m very grateful the opportunity that has been given to me.
All learning resources were received within a short time following payment. The support from my personal tutor was amazing, always at the end of a phone or email if I was in need. Helping break down anything I wasn't sure of until it started to make sense.
Having undertaken an extensive and challenging set of qualifications with HFE over the last couple of years, I have to say the tutors, support and course materials provided were first class. Whilst the standards required to pass are high, HFE were with me every step of the way in providing guidance and support to help achieve the qualifications. I would highly recommend HFE as a great training provider.
All the team at HFE have been great! I would like to have spent more time on technique for the individual exercises, other than that everything was perfect, a special shout out to Dani who helped me countless times with the anatomy level 3.
