Develop the knowledge and confidence to support and signpost clients with eating disorders
Our Level 3 Award in Understanding Eating Disorders course is essential for exercise and nutrition professionals wanting to get a deeper insight into a broad range of common eating disorders present in sport and exercise settings.
Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses which unfortunately are becoming more prevalent in society today, both here in the UK and around the world. According to research published by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the eating disorder charity, Beat, they are thought to affect up to 3.4 million people in the UK. Eating disorders are responsible for more deaths than any other mental health conditions, which is why they should be treated with the utmost priority, urgency, sensitivity and professionalism.
Many of the people suffering from an eating disorder have a significantly distorted image of their bodyweight and shape and will seek to control their weight, or lose even more weight, through a combination of food restriction and excessive exercise. Therefore, exercise professionals working in the active leisure sector are well placed to help support, guide and ultimately, empower those with eating disorders to face up to their reality and seek professional help.
