Frequently Asked Questions

  • What prior qualifications do I need for exercise to music?

You don't need any prior fitness qualifications to enrol on our exercise to music courses, but some experience taking part in ETM classes would be beneficial - unbranded programmes tend to work best. To get off on the best foot, an understanding of basic exercise to music steps and choreography is also important.

  • What will I learn on your exercise to music courses?

In summary, you'll learn everything you need to become a world-class group exercise instructor. This includes: concepts of using music for exercise; teaching and evaluating classes; MSE (muscular strength and endurance) concepts, and effective choreography for your chosen discipline. You’ll also develop a working knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology.

  • Once qualified, what types of classes will I be able to teach?

The options are almost limitless once you're a qualified instructor. Work is available on a freelance basis in gyms and health clubs, or you can create your own programmes and hire out private facilities. You'll also have the option to teach branded programmes like Les Mills and Beachbody, or even pole/hoop fitness - in these cases extra training and licensing fees may apply.

  • How will I be supported on my course?

As with every course and qualification we deliver, unlimited student support comes as standard. We have some of the very support tutors and assessors in the industry, the majority of whom deliver exercise to music classes of their own. This is coupled with cutting-edge learning resources which include: audiobooks, live webinars, access to digital manuals via the HFE app and exclusive choreography from international instructor Kardy Laguda.

  • What are progression options after I qualify?

Many of our graduates look to branch out into other forms of group exercise, with yoga and Pilates proving the most popular. As personal training is such a big part of the fitness industry, this is also a very rewarding career path worth considering.

  • Are these recognised exercise to music courses?

100%, yes. YMCA Awards, the industry's original awarding body, provide certification for our various exercise to music courses. They're also accredited by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs).

exercise to music with HFE

It used to be the case that exercise to music and group fitness classes didn’t always have the potential to appeal to the masses. Often you’d see a gym’s class timetable filled with ‘legs, bums, and tums’ and other similarly generic programmes. They were okay for some, but not everyone.

Things have changed however in recent times and the variety of programmes now available appeal to men and women of all ages, backgrounds and ability levels. This has been aided by popular branded programmes like Les Mills and alike, but freelance instructors creating their own classes and choreography have also played their part.

Regardless of the career path chosen, exercise to music instructors need to be versatile, full of energy and exude enthusiasm. This is all in service of capturing the attention of class participants, making sure they enjoy themselves and are able to get the most out of the workout. This is something international instructor Kardy Laguda has spent decades perfecting. He recommends instructors should strive for a signature style, a unique approach when it comes to teaching. In his own words, he says; “I have a signature and people should really think about getting themselves one. It has to be in the DNA of the individual instructor… You can use your signature to motivate people…”

Once qualified as an exercise to music instructor, a wide range of exciting possibilities open up. Instructors often work on a freelance basis, hiring out private facilities and crafting their own choreography. With the Level 2 Exercise to Music Instructor course under your belt, you’ll have the option to upskill to branded programmes. Additional training and licence fees may apply but ETM paves the way to teach Les Mills (Body Attack, Body Balance, Body Pump etc) and Beachbody (Insanity, P90x, Pi Yo etc). Level 2 exercise to music is also a prerequisite for pole and aerial fitness.

If you’re looking for a place to start then the Level 2 Exercise to Music Instructor course provides a perfect jumping off point. We also deliver aqua aerobics, step instructor and indoor cycling courses if you’re looking to bolster your repertoire of skills. Courses are delivered via the blended learning model which combines a period of home study combined with practical weekend attendance and assessments. Venues are available nationwide including Manchester, London, Dudley, Nottingham, Durham and Cardiff.
