Enable yourself to effectively work with disabled clients with the Level 3 Award in Programming and Supervising Exercise for Disabled Clients. This is an essential qualification for those fitness professionals looking to better serve this seriously underrepresented special population.

Recent reports have revealed that 1 in 5 people in the UK has a disability, which equates to around 19% of the total population. It’s also estimated that only 18% of disabled adults undertake physical activity for more than 30 minutes a week, compared to 38% of non-disabled adults. Clearly more can be done to encourage disabled people to exercise and fitness professionals can begin by gaining the necessary skills and knowledge to do so.

With our qualification, you will able to affect real change and provide a valuable service to those that need it. The qualification also provides a great progression route for current Level 2 fitness instructors and a valuable CPD opportunity for personal trainers and those currently working with other special populations.

Despite the specialised nature of the course, you’re still guaranteed to receive world-class training and unlimited support throughout your studies. This begins the moment you enrol and carries right through until you’re fully qualified.

Course content

This Level 3 Award is more than just a qualification, it’s a career enhancer. It will allow you to work a wider client base, while making you considerably more adaptable, marketable and versatile. Working with disabled clients will also prove to be an incredibly worthwhile and rewarding experience.

During your studies, you will learn:

How to identify and follow current legislation, including the Disability Discrimination Act and the Equality Act. You will also explore the legal obligations placed on health and fitness facilities to provide easy access for disabled people.

The importance of identifying and understanding a range of disabilities and impairments. These include: spinal injuries, hearing and visual impairments, learning difficulties, cerebal palsy, and amputation.

Barriers to exercise for disabled people, including physical and environmental barriers, as well as current societal attitudes towards disabled people.

How to safely programme and supervise exercise programmes for disabled clients, and the importance of making this exercise effective and enjoyable.

In order for you to stand the best chance of passing the course first time, you’ll be continually assessed by our dedicated support tutors and a team of assessors.

The course is assessed in the following ways:

  • Principles of Exercise for Disabled People
  • Planning and Adapting Exercise for Disabled People

Case study and verbal assessment:

For your course, you will be required to complete a case study on a client who has one of the disabilities covered in your manual

In order to enrol on this course, you must possess a Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification, either in the context of Gym or Exercise to Music. We also strongly recommend that you have a minimum of three months teaching experience.

This course is amazing, the information and support I got from my tutor was fantastic, if I ever was struggling with anything I just ring my tutor up and he would help figure out the issue I was having, also the student manual I received was filled with everything I needed to know and more.
