Industry-leading GP referral with content presented by a GPEnquire today
Discover a course designed to help fitness professionals work with clients and manage chronic illnesses and conditions. This is an essential qualification for progressing to Level 4 and beyond.
While the UK’s average life expectancy continues to rise, so does the prevalence of chronic illnesses and conditions like heart disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, obesity, diabetes and asthma. In order to meet the ever complex needs of the nation, today’s health and fitness professionals must have a solid understanding of these conditions, the impact they have on individuals and the most effective forms of treatment.
Exercise referral, or GP referral as it’s also known, enables exercise professionals to better serve existing clients, branch out to new people and work with organisations, such as the NHS, who refer clients.
Fully accredited by YMCA Awards, our GP referral course is also recognised by both REPs and CIMSPA. Not only is it an effective way to enhance a CV, but if you have your sights set on becoming a Level 4 exercise specialist then this Level 3 qualification is a prerequisite.
To really engage you as a learner and bring this course to life, we’ve enlisted one of the country’s foremost GPs to present an innovative series of video lectures. This is backed up by unlimited tutor support, access to our online student system, and bespoke manuals.
Becoming a leading exercise referral specialist takes a certain level of commitment and the right blend of specialised knowledge and skills.
The following is by far an exhaustive list, but here are some of the topics you’ll encounter while studying exercise referral:
The conditions you’ll learn about include:
Level 3 Anatomy and Physiology and Level 3 Nutrition also make up part of this course. If you’ve already completed these as part of another course or discipline, for example, personal training, you won’t need to repeat them.
The course is comprised of various components that will give you the opportunity to demonstrate your GP referral knowledge in a range of practical and theoretical ways.
As a minimum, you’ll need to have previously completed Level 3 Anatomy and Physiology and Level 3 Nutrition. If you’re a qualified personal trainer or you’ve studied these units as a part of another course then you’re all set.
If you haven’t, our Careers team is on hand if you’re missing either prerequisite element.
Before your practical weekend, we recommend you undertake 8-10 weeks of home study. During this period you’ll have ample opportunity to watch our video lectures, presented by a leading GP, get familiar with LES (the Learner Engagement System) and read your bespoke manuals.
There are also two invigilated worksheets that require, these are: medical conditioning and an activity guidelines table – these must be taken separately to the two-day practical weekend, and your support tutor will be able to help arrange a suitable date at one of our venues.

Take your qualification further by combining it with others, saving money and benefiting from exclusive extras like videos, career support and job opportunities.
And so do your clients... that's why our courses are designed and delivered by a team of clinical and technical experts.

It was very intensive, a lot to study and hard work. The practical weekend was great, the tutors had a lot of energy and passion for the subject, there was a lot to learn. The remote tutor was also really supportive and positive.

I’ve just completed my L3 Pilates instructor training and couldn’t have done it without the support of tutor Stacey. The online material is great, the videos are jam packed with information and bring the written material to life.
