It's ideally suited for those with a passion for health and fitness, who are looking for an exciting career change. Gyms, leisure centres and health clubs are vibrant and fast-paced places to work, and they require motivated and knowledgeable professionals to teach exercise to their members.

The course also forms the first stage in achieving the highly desirable personal trainer status. More information can be found on the Personal Trainer Essentials Diploma page, which combines this Level 2 qualification and the Level 3 Personal Trainer Certificate, saving you money in the process.

Certified by YMCA Awards (formerly CYQ), this course is widely recognised throughout Europe, Canada and Australia. It's a qualification that will absolutely open doors, and set you on a path to achieving your dream career. The course is delivered via a blend of distance learning and two weekend practical workshops at one of our national venues. It’s not all about what you learn however, how you use this knowledge in the role itself is just as important.

Being a gym instructor means that no two days are the same. It’s an incredibly varied role that could have you doing anything from performing inductions for members, maintaining exercise equipment, giving diet advice, and planning sessions - the list goes on. Our qualification will make sure you can hit the ground running. Pass rates speak for themselves and we're consistently looking to go above and beyond when it comes to delivering results. From e-learning materials to support from our experienced tutors, everything you need to achieve this Level 2 qualification is provided for by us.

From the outset of the course you’ll start to learn exactly what it takes to become a gym instructor. The course covers a wide-range of theory and practical elements of the role, and is delivered in an engaging and interactive way. To introduce you to the course, here are some of things we cover:

Assessment Method

The course is split up into multiple components, designed to assess you in a range of practical and theoretical ways. Throughout the course you’ll be required to complete:

  • Worksheets - including: health and safety, and supporting and managing clients
  • Multiple choice theory exams - taken on the practical days of your course, these exams include anatomy and physiology and principles of exercise and fitness
  • Lesson plan – demonstrating your ability to effectively plan and programme gym-based exercise, and outlining the activities you plan to teach in your practical assessment
  • Continuous practical assessment - a rehearsal of the skills you've learned so far, demonstrating your ability to teach a range of gym-based exercises
  • Summative assessment - here you'll perform a complete gym-based induction, just as you would in the role itself

While there are no formal prerequisites for this qualification, experience of using a gym, and a passion for the industry will help you get off to a flying start. We usually recommend that you dedicate around 8-10 hours a week to your studies; this ensures you'll be fully prepared for your final assessments.
