Why it matters

Creating a more inclusive fitness industry starts with understanding the challenge.

Disabled people continue to face inequalities in accessing physical activity. From confidence and representation, as well as the availability of inclusive coaching and supportive environments.

  • 25% of the UK population have a disability, representing millions of people who should have equal opportunities to experience the benefits of movement.
  • 3% of disabled people are physically inactive, compared with 19.7% of non-disabled people.
  • Disabled people are less likely to feel they belong in sport and activity (35% vs 57% of non-disabled people).
  • Nearly seven in ten disabled people who experience loneliness said being active could help them feel less lonely.
