Course overview: Fundamentals of meditation for yoga teachers

Meditation practice is a core part of the yogic experience and most yoga classes dedicate time for students to meditate. If you want to learn more about the different ways that meditation can be practiced and taught in your yoga classes, our fundamentals of meditation course is for you.

Our yoga meditation course is delivered entirely online in an on-demand format. This means that you can work through the online lectures and practical activities entirely at your own pace.

The course is split into 3 distinct units and each unit includes a combination of learning and assessment activities. The first unit explores the fundamentals of meditation as it relates to yoga, and seeks to define what meditation is and where it sits in a historical context based on ancient yogic references and texts. The second unit presents a range of yoga meditation styles, types and techniques, including the different ways meditation is practiced in different styles of yoga. The final unit explores how to teach meditation safely and effectively to others, ensuring that you are also aware of the many different considerations and contraindications.

The programme is delivered through a combination of short online learning lessons, theory lectures and practical workshops, all designed to consolidate your knowledge and understanding of meditation as it relates to yoga practice. While the course is specifically designed to support newly qualified yoga teachers, enrolment is open to anyone that wants to learn more about meditation and yoga.

Taught by one of our senior yoga teachers with decades of applied teaching experience across a variety of lineages, the course will walk you through the fundamentals of yoga meditation, highlighting the different ways different schools and lineages of yoga use it.
As you might expect with any course on yoga meditation, this programme explores how meditation, or ‘dhyana’ as it is known in the yoga community, links to ancient yogic texts, scriptures and practices.

Whether you’re a serious yoga enthusiast, or a newly qualified teacher looking to get a greater understanding of the different ways you can use meditation in your classes, this course is for you.

Frequently asked questions

Featured below is a range of common questions we’re asked about our Fundamentals of Yoga Meditation course. If you do have a question that has not been answered below, please feel free to get in touch with our Careers Team on 0800 612 4067.

  • Does this meditation course allow me to teach others?

If you are already a qualified yoga teacher, then yes, you can teach meditation to others, individuals or groups. The content in this yoga meditation course goes beyond what is included in standard yoga instructor courses and as such, will enable you to deliver a more comprehensive and authentic yogic meditation session to your students.

If you aren’t a qualified yoga teacher, then unfortunately, you shouldn’t be teaching meditation (or any other yogic activities) to others because you don’t have the training or qualifications to do so. If you are interested in becoming a yoga teacher, this is an area we specialise in and would be more than happy to give you some advice.

  • How long does the course take to complete?

This depends on how much time you have to commit to study and how quickly you progress through the learning. Most students will complete this course within a couple of weeks, although some students have completed it in considerably less.

Broadly speaking, the course has approximately 10-12 hours of learning, depending on how long it takes you to read the online learning content, watch the lectures, participate in the guided meditation practices, and of course make notes. If you need to re-take any of the assessments, this may also increase the time it takes you to complete the course.

  • What style of yoga is used to deliver this course?

This programme is primarily taught in the context of hatha yoga, which is the foundational branch of yoga that focuses on physical postures (asana) and yogic breathing techniques (pranayama) that are used to prepare the mind for meditation (dhyana). That said, throughout the course there are plenty of links and references to other styles of yoga, including Vinyasa yoga, Ashtanga yoga, and Yin for example.

  • Will this course help me to improve my meditation practice?

Perhaps. This course is primarily designed for yoga teachers to help them to improve their knowledge and understanding of meditation, and how to teach it more effectively to others. If, however, you have an active interest in learning about the science of meditation and the many styles and techniques used in yoga to support your own practice, then you may in fact get a lot of personal benefit, yes.

The guided practices in this meditation course are delivered by a highly skilled and experienced teacher with thousands of teaching hours under her belt. If you truly want to experience an authentic yoga meditation experience to improve your own practice and mental focus, then you will get a lot of value from this course.
