Fern Watson Success Story
What is your background with exercise and fitness training?
I have always loved being involved in many sports throughout my life and I have been captain and coached many sports such as, trampolining, netball, horse riding, swimming, rounders, athletics, dancing and gymnastics. As I have grown older I have got to an amazing level in these sports, I have represented the county in swimming and have rode my horse also at a quite high level.
However, work and other commitments have taken over my sports and now I don’t have as much time as I did to compete, so I joined the gym to keep up my fitness and I absolutely loved it; so I then decided to look for courses to become a gym instructor. I did so much course research it actually took me around 3 months to look in to all different ways of doing this course and HFE was the best training provider around with the best facilities and the greatest support!
Why did you choose the course you did?
I chose to do the Level 2 Gym Instructing course as it seemed to be the best course for me as it opens a lot of different pathways for you, such as you can go on to do the Level 3 Personal Training course, you can teach classes and also work within the gym and try to gain a higher status within that company for example, manager, or supervisor. It has been the best idea I have ever had to take part in the Level 2 Gym Instructors course as it has also enabled me to have a greater chance of getting a job within the leisure industry as I have both my lifeguard and gym qualification now.
Why did you choose HFE to deliver your training?
I chose HFE as my training providers as they had the best reviews on all of their training aspects. Once I got started on the distance learning I realised it wasn’t really like I was distance learning as the tutor was always contacting me checking I was doing all my work and always interested in what I did and what I didn’t understand. Once I got my login details for the LMS it was brilliant they was everything I needed to know on there as well as my two information booklets. However, If I didn’t get something, I knew that it wouldn’t be long until my tutor Gregg replied giving me all the help which I needed. Then I went on to the two weekends training and got the best training and the best help, they was on the ball they knew what they was covering, what was happening throughout the day and they also had a lot of experience and advice to give us. Once I had finished my first weekend the weight on my shoulders had been lifted as I knew exactly what I was meant to be doing for the next weekend which would be assessment weekend. Throughout the time which was in between the two weekends Gregg which was my tutor and all the other members of staff where there for me if I had any questions or to explain things I didn’t understand. Choosing HFE was probably the best decision I ever made when choosing which places to complete a course and I never felt as I was learning alone there was always support available for me.
What did you enjoy most about your course?
I enjoyed everything about my course, (even the learning process) I especially enjoyed the weekends where it was the revising and practical learning. I met new people, learnt new skills, everyone was so polite, helpful and friendly, it was a great environment to work in and it was extremely beneficial and the staff where extremely helpful. The quality of teaching was absolutely outstanding which I received from the course tutors.
What did you find most challenging about your course?
At first I thought that the distance learning was going to be a struggle and I wouldn’t get it done. However, after the first few weeks of getting in to a routine, I didn’t find it a struggle to fit it in at all in fact I really enjoyed the learning process, it was great to know all the useful exercises and the specific tips on how to use the machines properly really helped me with my own training.
How would you rate the quality of teaching provided by your course tutors?
The quality of teaching was absolutely outstanding which I received from the course tutors. I honestly couldn’t have asked them to be any better. I got all the information I needed and more, they were extremely helpful and knew exactly what they were talking about. HFE has an outstanding quality of teaching.
To what extent did you feel supported during the home-study phase of your course?
Throughout the whole course I felt that my support was excellent. I knew exactly what I was doing throughout the course, I knew what worksheets I had to get done, they where all marked efficiently and with great feedback. I never felt as if I was getting ignored or left behind, I knew exactly what I was doing and when and where I should have been up to at what time. It was an excellent way of learning with excellent support whenever it was needed to help.
How would you rate the teaching and learning materials provided to you?
HFE’s learning booklets were so helpful to me and all my peers whom attended the weekend with me. If it wasn’t for those booklets and the learning worksheets I had, the revision would have been really hard for me, as I struggle with revision at the best of times. However, not with this course I had support, worksheets and the booklets and found it very easy to revise and take in the knowledge which I needed for this course.
What is your current role?
I’m currently working at a leisure centre, I work there on late shifts and early shifts working in the gym, watching over the pool and working behind reception. I wouldn’t have had an opportunity working in the gym if I didn’t attend the HFE course. I feel as if the people in the gym really benefit from it and so do I, as everyone is training correctly and getting the motivation which I have for training. It is great, I absolutely love it and it is all because of the excellent training I have been given from HFE!
What are your future training and career plans?
I’m not to sure what the future will bring for me just yet. However, I am thinking of working within a gym with just my instructing qualification first and then once I have done that for a year I think I will book on to the Level 3 Personal Training course, and then work for myself once I have a great clientele built up. Then I will start to do other courses which HFE offer to build up my qualifications and have a whole list of them so I have better knowledge and advice for my clients. These courses will all be through HFE as I have had a great experience financially and the way that they work and the support that they offer!
