Success Stories: Miri Vogler
Why did you choose the course you did?
I thought that Pilates would be a great addition to my Exercise to Music qualification; it is popular and some of the gyms I teach at already have asked if I am Pilates qualified. I have tried Pilates on and off for a few years but really got into around a year ago and now go three or four times a week. I find Pilates both relaxing and challenging and would love to be able to give others the same experience. I also think that Pilates would be great to teach for a long time as it doesn’t have the same risks of injury and eventual wear and tear that accompanies teaching Aerobics and other higher impact forms of exercise.
Why did you choose HFE to deliver your training?
I discovered that HFE could provide me with funding to do the Pilates Instructor course if I did it before I was 25, so I decide sooner was definitely better than later.
What is your background with exercise and fitness training?
I first joined a gym in early 2013 and quickly because addicted to going to classes; I was in a stressful job at the time working as a Set Design Assistant for a theatre company and soon realised that going to classes was the main thing that I would look forward to during the day. As soon as I finished the job I signed up to do an intensive Level 2 ETM course and have been trying to build up my classes ever since. I love teaching and finally feel like I’ve found a job that feels fulfilling and enjoyable; it’s the best thing to see people coming back week after week because they enjoy your class and are starting to notice the difference in their fitness.
What did you enjoy most about your course?
I loved the face to face weekends in London where it was brilliant to meet all the other people doing the course. There were so many interesting and diverse people who all seemed to be trying to carve out their own individual and stimulating career paths and thought that Pilates would be a wonderful addition to their skill set. The tutors made everything interesting and there was a good balance between practical workshops and theory so it didn’t feel like we were spending all our time in a classroom.
What did you find most challenging about your course?
I found the anatomy and physiology particularly challenging but also really fascinating and luckily there was tons of help available for when we got stuck.
How would you rate the quality of teaching provided by your course tutors?
The quality of teaching was fantastic from both our face to face course tutors and our phone support course tutor. They always made it abundantly clear that they were ready and willing to help with any problem/question we had no matter how big or small.
To what extent did you feel supported during the home-study phase of your course?
Very supported! It was great knowing that help was only a phone call away. That being said, I personally work better in a classroom environment where you can bounce ideas off each other and motivate each other so I would have enjoyed even more face to face days, but understand that that isn’t always possible. The home study was definitely made much easier by having so much support at the other end of the phone.
How would you rate the teaching and learning materials provided to you?
Both extremely good. The LMS is really useful and breaks things down in a clear and understandable way. I only wish I’d looked at the LMS in more depth earlier in the course rather than focusing on the books and waiting to use the LMS until my A&P exams were approaching.
What is your current role?
I currently teach 6 ETM classes a week and mix that with my part-time work as an artist/illustrator. I have one or two Pilates classes lined up waiting for me for when I have the transport to get to them (getting a car soon – yay!).
What are your future training and career plans?
I hope to spend a while getting used to becoming a Pilates instructor and expanding my knowledge/experience, then I would also like to do my Body Balance qualification and possibly a nutritionist qualification. In the long term it is my dream to take the exercise qualifications abroad somewhere hot and sunny. As far as dream jobs go teaching Pilates on or near a warm beach sounds pretty perfect 🙂
