Rosie O’Neill Success Story
Why did you choose the course you did?
I have been doing Pilates and Yoga for about 7 years and I’ve done more and more as I have got older. I really love my practice and I have also found it has become increasingly important as I spend most of my time at a desk so was frequently getting shoulder and back pain, which completely disappeared through frequent Pilates classes. I started to think about training to be an instructor about a year ago – I thought that it would be a real privilege to turn my love of pilates into a career and to enable more people to get involved in Pilates and help more people access its many benefits. This pilates course is great because it qualifies instructors to teach classes but also provides opportunities to work one-to-one with physios and with lifestyle-related issues.
What is your background with exercise and fitness training?
This was my first course in exercise and fitness training and is something I never thought I would have done 3 years ago – it’s a real achievement. I have always loved sport but never ever thought I would have the confidence or opportunity to teach.
Why did you choose HFE to deliver your training?
I chose HFE because I felt the course was exceptionally good value, particularly considering the amount of contact time and individual support available and the quality of learning resources provided. I am currently a post-graduate student and busy studying and have to travel around for work a lot and the course fitted in really well with this. I was able to study online or through the books or audiotapes wherever I was and the practical elements of the course were fit into three weekends and in a convenient location so I was able to attend without too many problems.

What did you enjoy most about your course?
The whole course was really interesting, enjoyable and well-designed but best of all were the course tutors – they were incredibly knowledgeable about both Pilates and health and fitness more generally and I felt that they took a real interest in each of us as individuals, and encouraged us to develop our own teaching style, skills and interests.
The other students taking the course also made the course really enjoyable. Everyone came from many different backgrounds and had different levels of experience in the fitness industry and in Pilates and this really contributed to the learning experience, allowing everyone to share experiences and advice. Without exception all the other students were great fun, everyone wanted to support and encourage each other, and I’m sure we will stay in touch long into the future.
What did you find most challenging about your course?
The anatomy and physiology was challenging! I hadn’t done biology beyond GCSE so a lot of the information was new, but the coruse tutors explained about the exams really well and I felt I understood a lot better and was much more confident after the practical weekends.
How would you rate the quality of teaching provided by your course tutors?
The tutors were amazing- so knowledgeable and experienced and they made what was a very intense and challenging course enjoyable and easy to understand. The training was really well designed, covering Pilates technique, teaching skills, using equipment, physiology and anatomy and career development advice, and I really loved how it provided plenty of opportunities to practice practical skills, get individual support, ask questions, and practice and develop teaching skills. The course was very well run- we always finished on time, there were plenty of opportunities to ask questions and get individual help, and the tutors were very understanding and flexible if for any reason a student had to miss any part of the course.
To what extent did you feel supported during the home-study phase of your course?
The distance learning tutors were great and I felt really supported throughout the course- I didn’t much use this aspect of support because I was travelling so much, but it was lovely to know that Martyn was always on the end of the phone if I needed him and he made the effort to contact me regularly.
The books, online learning environment and videos and audio books were really useful, allowing everyone to use the resources which suited their own learning styles.
What is your current role?
I am currently doing postgraduate research, but was hoping to teach alongside my studies.
What are your future training and career plans?
I hope to start teaching community classes and to get a role teaching health club classes at some point in the next few months. Long-term I would like to establish a business offering one-to-one Pilates to help with lifestyle related postural issues and sports-related fitness goals. I am also hoping to train to be a yoga instructor, to gain qualifications allowing me to work with older populations and to develop my knowledge of advanced Pilates, MMA and tai chi techniques. I will definitely choose HFE again for future training.
