What is your background with exercise and fitness training?
I have been an active athlete my entire life, which started with playing football at 5 years old, and led to playing semi-professionally in Germany. During my active football years, I have learned a great deal about how to build and train for a high performance athletic body. After moving from Germany to the UK in 2007, I joined the gym at my place of work, where I’ve trained 5 times a week for the past 6 years.
During the first 3-4 years I trained with a colleague, who was in his late 50s at the time, and had accumulated more than 40 years of weight training experience. Throughout our training sessions, I learned how to apply correct techniques, ‘tips and tricks’ of the trade, how to maintain the right attitude, as well ways to build my motivation and confidence in order to surpass my limits and achieve greater levels of fitness. The knowledge built and the friendship made with this colleague was an invaluable experience.
Why did you choose the course you did?
Once my colleague retired, I continued training and started to develop my own personal style and programme (including diet) using a variety of written publications and online resources. This enabled me to start forming my body in a more distinct and focused way, and allowed me to achieve my ultimate goal of a defined and high performing athletic physique.
My physical transformation was soon noticed by others at the gym, who then started asking me questions and advice about my programme, the techniques I used and the nutritional habits I adopted. Even more experienced gym members were consulting me, which I took as a great compliment and confirmation that I was on the right track.
After countless conversations, I began to realise that I truly enjoyed helping people achieve their fitness goals. I felt great satisfaction in supporting their desire to improve not only their physical state, but to also to create a more holistic outlook of a healthier lifestyle. I could see my motivation and passion being instilled within them, and took pride in having such a positive impact.
It was these incentives that inspired me to become a Level 2 Gym Instructor and a Level 3 Personal Trainer, which I felt was a very natural progression for me.
Why did you choose HFE to deliver your training?
After researching a number of fitness service providers, it was clear that HFE was one of the leading institutions in fitness qualifications. The number of positive reviews in comparison to other providers really stood out and this was further evidenced by the highly informative telephone conversations that helped me make my decision.
A significant point that I came across was the discrepancies in price between HFE and other providers. The key, I believe, is the savings in the overhead costs, which HFE passes on to their customers without sacrificing the service they provide. Their reasonable and fair approach to offer a ‘good value for money’ service was not only an important financial benefit, but a welcomed methodology during these difficult economic times.

What did you enjoy most about your course?
I really enjoyed the interaction with people from so many diverse backgrounds. Although we all have a common aim in obtaining our licenses, this type of diversity and each individual’s vision and experiences really lent itself to a unique learning opportunity. My peers were very friendly, supportive and easy to get along with, allowing us to effectively build our network, which is encouraged throughout the course.
What did you find most challenging about your course?
The depth of anatomical and physiological knowledge was for me, the most challenging aspect of the course. It can be overwhelming to learn new terms and definitions when it comes to elements of the human body, but I found that learning these foundations was very interesting and that helped mitigate the challenge. In the end, this challenge gave me more confidence and increased my understanding of how the internal body and muscles function and how this can contribute to more effective workouts.
How would you rate the quality of teaching provided by your course tutors?
I was very impressed by the tutors’ expertise. Both Ben and John, who have been in the industry for more than 20 years, each brought a vast amount of knowledge and experience which made the course very informative and equally enjoyable. Both were very supportive and helpful, and they clearly communicated what was required in order for you to succeed.
To what extent did you feel supported during the home-study phase of your course?
The customer service provided by HFE was excellent. The telephone support I received from Gregg was very helpful and I never felt that I was left on my own. Despite not actually having any questions for Gregg, he would still call to check up on me and see how I was getting along. From this it was evident that if I did have question, Gregg would be quick and responsive to my query.
How would you rate the teaching and learning materials provided to you?
The teaching material was very comprehensive and well written, even providing tips on how to remember certain constellation of the spine or lungs for example. These techniques made it easier to understand and absorb the material.
What is your current role and what are your future training/career plans?
I have been offered a position in my local gym whilst simultaneously pursuing my Level 3 Personal Trainer license with HFE. Once I complete my Level 3 Personal Trainer license, my short-term goal is to gain a qualification in Level 3 Sports Conditioning. The long term goal is to do a Master degree in Sport Science but we will see what the future holds.
