What a career in Personal Training looks like

As a Personal Trainer, you’ll support clients throughout their health, fitness, and wellbeing journey—both physically and mentally. Whether helping someone lose weight, build muscle, or complete a 10K event, the role is varied, enjoyable, and highly rewarding.

You’ll typically work with clients on a one-to-one basis, although many personal trainers also deliver small group sessions. No two days—or clients—are the same, and you’ll take on a variety of responsibilities. While much of your time will be spent planning and delivering tailored workouts, you’ll also act as a coach, mentor, and trusted professional your clients can rely on.

As your career progresses, you may choose to specialise in areas such as strength and conditioning, body transformations, nutrition coaching, or health coaching. You might also expand your services to include corrective exercise, sports massage, or injury rehabilitation, with a range of specialist courses available to support your development in these areas.

Alongside this, you’ll develop valuable skills in business, marketing, and client management—helping you attract and retain clients, build your reputation, and create a successful, long-term career.

You’ll play a vital role in:

  • Initial assessment

Assessing clients’ fitness, movement and readiness for exercise

  • Goal setting and support

Setting goals, tracking progress, and providing positive lifestyle support

  • Programme design

    Designing personalised, results-driven exercise programmes

  • Session delivery

Delivering engaging and varied training sessions that are safe and effective

  • Nutrition guidance

Providing advice on healthy eating, nutrition and hydration strategies

  • Client relationships

Building strong, lasting relationships that drive long-term success

Career opportunities and progression

With demand for quality personal trainers continuing to grow, both online and in-person, there is no shortage of exciting and rewarding opportunities available.

Many experienced personal trainers naturally progress into senior leadership roles, either in a gym or health club environment, or in their own personal training businesses. Progression into these roles will give you a greater opportunity to support other fitness professionals in their career development, while also learning more about how other parts of the business work.

Our personal training courses open the door to a wide range of exciting career opportunities, including:

  • Gym-based personal training

Deliver tailored sessions in health clubs or leisure facilities.

  • Boutique personal training

Provide premium, one-to-one or small group sessions in specialised training studios.

  • Mobile personal training

Work with clients outdoors or in their homes for flexible, on-the-go sessions.

  • Corporate fitness training

Lead wellness and fitness sessions in workplace settings.

  • Online coaching

Support clients remotely with personalised programmes, guidance, and nutrition advice.

  • Hybrid coaching

Combine in-person and online coaching to offer a flexible, comprehensive client service.

Why become a Personal Trainer

Personal training is more than a job—it’s a career for those who are passionate about exercise, fitness, and helping others thrive. At its core, the role is about people, not programmes, so it’s essential that you enjoy working closely with others—that’s what truly makes it personal.

Personal training is also one of the most flexible roles in the fitness industry, allowing you to work in a variety of settings. Whether you want to work with clients in a gym, office, hotel, or even their own home, as a qualified personal trainer, you’ll have the credentials to do so. You can also choose to take your services online and work as an online fitness coach, although it’s usually best to build experience by working with clients in person first.

Ultimately, personal training is a dynamic, people-focused profession that blends many disciplines, including exercise science, coaching, practical psychology, and communication. For those who are truly passionate, it offers a varied career where no two days are the same—and where the rewards extend far beyond the gym floor.

Frequently asked personal trainer questions

Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions we get from those considering enrolling on one of our personal training courses. If you don’t see the information you’re looking for, feel free to reach out to our friendly Careers Team, who are always happy to help. There’s absolutely no pressure to enrol, and they will be able to provide more personalised advice on how to become a qualified personal trainer. You can reach them directly on 0800 612 4067.

  • How do I become a personal trainer?

To practice as a professional personal trainer, you must have the correct qualifications. You can start with the Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification, which will allow you to work on the gym floor. You’ll then need to complete the Level 3 Personal Training qualification to work as a PT. You can choose to enrol on these courses separately, but we recommend enrolling on our Personal Training Essentials package, which combines the two to create a Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training, giving you a clear and structured route to becoming a personal . Our courses are also endorsed by CIMSPA, demonstrating that we meet industry professional standards.

To explore what it truly takes to become a leading personal trainer in detail, we’ve created a step-by-step guide on how to become a personal trainer, which explores everything from getting qualified, to being insured and launching your career.

You only have to look at some of the UK’s best personal trainers to understand that there is no one magic formula or blueprint. Instead, to become a personal trainer you need to have a burning desire to help people, great communication skills, a passion for self-improvement, and a client-focused attitude.

  • How long will it take to get qualified as a personal trainer?

How long it takes you to qualify depends on the course or package you enrol in. For our Personal Training Essentials package, the average time it takes to complete is 10-12 weeks. Our larger packages will take longer to complete. If you enrol in an online course, you will have up to 12 months to complete your course.

That said, these timescales are just guidelines. Every learner is unique and will approach their studies at a different pace. We know first-hand how exciting, rewarding and life-changing a career in personal training can be, and when it comes to the all-important studies, this isn’t something we like to rush. The more time, effort and attention you can invest in your personal training education, the better chance you have after qualifying of truly taking the industry by storm.

  • Are in-person or online courses better?

If you’re looking for a well-rounded learning experience that combines theory with hands-on practical training, an in-person or blended course may be the best option. These courses offer a more structured and interactive learning environment, giving you greater opportunities to learn directly from our team of expert tutors. The additional guidance and support you get from an in-person course can help build your skills, confidence, and readiness for a career in the fitness industry. When students book our in-person courses, they often tell us they are more focused because they have a specific training and assessment date that they are working towards.

In comparison, online courses are ideal for those who need greater flexibility, or a more affordable study option. Our online personal trainer courses allow you to learn at your own pace and fit your studies around existing commitments. However, successful online learning typically requires a high level of self-motivation, effective time management, and the ability to study independently without distraction.

  • Do you run personal training courses near me?

We’ve partnered with some of the UK’s best-equipped and most well-known gym chains, health clubs, and leisure centres to deliver the practical elements of our personal training courses. By working with the likes of David Lloyd, Bannatyne, and Village Hotels, to name just a few, we’re able to offer you maximum choice and flexibility when it comes to your studies.

We currently deliver our personal training courses at over 20 venues across England, Scotland, and Wales. Our most popular locations include London-Central, London-East, Manchester, Cardiff, York, Nottingham, Birmingham, Leeds and Bristol.

A full list of venues can be found on our page. Here, you can learn more about each venue’s facilities, accessibility, and any available offers or discounts, such as reduced hotel rates. We’ve also included a route planner to help you find the best way to travel to your training, whether by walking, driving, or public transport.

  • What learning resources are available while I study?

You’ll benefit from 24/7 access to LES (Learner Engagement System). This is where you’ll complete the majority of your home study. You’ll have access to practice quizzes, workbooks, and hours of video lectures delivered by leading physiotherapists, doctors, nutritionists, and , including one of the UK’s best PT’s, Luke Worthington.

Alongside our online resources, you’ll also receive printed manuals that have been exclusively written and designed in-house by a team of experts. If you’d like a preview of the comprehensive materials we provide, you can take a look at a sample of our Level 3 Personal Trainer Manual.

  • What support will I receive throughout my course?

From the moment you enrol, you’ll be assigned a personal support tutor who is available Monday to Friday via phone or email. Your tutor is a qualified and experienced personal trainer who understands the journey firsthand, so no question is too big or too small.

  • Do you offer guaranteed interviews?

In short, no—and that’s because we believe in being completely transparent. Some providers advertise “guaranteed interviews” or jobs, but these are often self-employed roles where you may need to pay rent to work in a gym before gaining clients. In reality, these opportunities are open to any personal trainers, regardless of who you complete your training with. You can read more about this in our article about guaranteed interviews and jobs.

Instead, we focus on supporting you into genuine, sustainable employment. Once you qualify, you’ll gain access to CV Connect via LES (Learner Engagement System). This allows you to upload your CV, explore opportunities with leading UK fitness employers, and apply directly without agencies or unnecessary barriers.

  • What payment options do you have?

Once you’ve chosen the personal training course or package that’s right for you and selected your preferred venue, the last thing that should hold you back is payment. That’s why we offer a range of flexible options to make your journey as straightforward as possible.

If you’d prefer to pay upfront, we offer a 5% discount when you pay in full for your PT course or career package.

If you’d rather spread the cost, we provide 0% interest payment plans over 6 or 12 months. With these options, you can secure your place on a personal training course from as little as £100, or £250 for a career package.

For more details on our discounts and pricing structure, take a look at our Price Promise.

Selected personal training courses and packages are also military approved. If you’re currently serving or a service leaver, you can contact our Careers team on 0800 612 4067 to find out more about the MOD’s Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme (ELCAS).

Personal training courses with HFE

Fitness is mainstream, it’s the new black and it’s here to stay. In terms of value, figures suggest that the UK’s health and fitness industry is worth well over £5bn and greatly contributing to this is personal training, with revenues exceeding £650m a year.

Despite unprecedented levels of inactivity and sedentary behaviour, exercise participation is on the rise as more and more people are turning to fitness and specifically personal trainers to help them achieve their goals. With the number of gyms operating in the UK hitting 7,000 and 1 in 7 adults in the UK being a member of a gym, your time to become a personal trainer, secure your dream job and change lives is right now.

Personal trainers play a pivotal role in the fitness industry. On a daily basis, they are there for clients, whether that’s to be a confidant, a motivator or an expert delivering exercise and nutritional advice. It’s such an exciting and multifaceted job where no two days will ever be the same.

So where do you start if becoming a PT is for you? It’s a simple question and the answer is with our CIMSPA approved personal trainer courses. Regardless of your ambition and the success you’re looking to carve out for yourself, you need the right qualification to get you going. For newcomers, it all begins with the Level 2 Gym Instructor course and from here you’ll progress to the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training. These can either be completed with face-to-face training or from the comfort of your own home with an online personal trainer course.

It doesn’t stop here, however. While you can do each of our personal training courses separately, we’ve created our PT career packages with a view to really helping you set yourself up in the industry. With our Essentials, Premium and Master packages, you’re free to forge your own path and in the process benefit from extras and exclusives like video content from the likes of Matt Roberts and Ben Coomber, exclusive job opportunities via CV Connect and more.

If you’re looking for alternative specialisms, then our outdoor training courses and sports conditioning qualifications may also be of interest to you.
